The picture shows Gábor Pávkovics, Mayor of Mohács, and Emil Németh, Western Hungary Regional Director of Magyar Posta.
The Battle of Mohács is a defining turning point in Hungarian history. Although the battle ended in an Ottoman victory, the perseverance of the Hungarian soldiers became a prominent example of patriotic sacrifice in the national memory.
Magyar Posta is committed to preserving Hungary’s cultural and historical heritage. The commemorative souvenir sheet prepared for the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Mohács is not only a philatelic specialty but also a tribute to those who sacrificed their lives in defense of their country on August 29, 1526.
The souvenir sheet issued on the occasion of the anniversary evokes the era with the help of outstanding works of art related to the historical event. The background design of the sheet features the woodcut titled The Battle of Mohács, created in 1526. The stamp image on the left displays István Dorffmaister’s work titled Portrait of Louis II, while the stamp image on the right shows a detail from József Borsos’s painting The Battle of Mohács in 1526 (a copy of István Dorffmaister's painting). The special first-day cover (FDC) is decorated with a detail from Bertalan Székely’s painting The Discovery of the Body of Louis II. The first-day cancellation stamp features the official logo of the Mohács 500 Memorial Year.
The souvenir sheet was produced by Pénzjegynyomda Zrt. based on the designs of graphic artist Balázs Hajnal, using photographs by István Füzi and Gerald Raab. The special envelopes were manufactured by Pátria Nyomda Zrt.
The new issue is already available for purchase at Filaposta, philatelic specialized services, selected post offices, and on the website www.posta.hu.
